Historically, Carver-Langston is actually two neighborhoods, bundled into one. Carver is named for George Washington Carver, the famous black inventor, and Langston Terrace is named for John Mercer Langston, the first black American from Virginia to serve in the United States Congress. The National Register of Historic Places credits Langston Golf Course to be the first course in the United States to allow black golfers. This history is displayed by the traditional D.C. townhomes that populate most of the neighborhood, though there are occasional apartment complexes in the area.
